Chan Dany

Chan Dany portrait Feb 24 (1) web.jpg

Chan Dany, born in Prey Veng in 1984, is a highly accomplished Cambodian contemporary artist. His artistic journey began at the prestigious Reyum Art School, where he honed his skills from 2002 to 2008.  Dany employs knowledge of the ancient relict of kbach rachana, or Khmer decorative forms - an ancient code of organic shapes and patterns applied in different styles.

From a distance Chan’s art even resembles tapestry work, but upon closer viewing his technique is revealed. His practice of medium requires dedication and imminent repetition reminiscent of traditional master-artisan methods of production.  Working with organic shapes and patterns, Chan Dany understands the resource and materials. He notes that "one's waste is one's creation". An art medium that transitions of technique, culture and artisan tapestry work.
